I think that the space program has had a profound effect on society. Just look at all the questions being asked about if the astronauts in fact have landed on the moon. It is all to obvious that they are putting this question out as a joke, and all the responses that I have seen confirm that everyone knows this.
Psychologically, we have extended the definition of man into space. We are no longer confined to the Earth. And yes; The spin offs. Cool.
