Do those trying out for musicals at your school audition for a specific role? In 40 years of directing, I never had anyone audition for anything except the entire show. If you didn't get the role of Reno and were just in the ensemble would it matter a lot? If so, I don't want you in my show. I want someone who will do whatever role I think they will best serve the show in. Now, having said my piece: The best you can do is give the best audition possilbe. Chose a great Cole Porter tune and practice it until you can really do it well. When you read from the script, read with enthusiasm, not fast, but energetic, and clearly. Remember acting is playing, playing is fun, an audition is a chance to act and have fun, so do that!
