It seems that most ancient cultures in central Asia and central Europe such as the Hattian and Chinese as well as the Mayan in South America had a belief in some sort of dragon like serpent. Seeing how they were far apart and that folk lore is usually based on a concrete event, Do you think there was a possibility of some sort of species of reptile that was able to survive, although not in large quantities, and soon became extinct.

I realize we have the alligator and crocodile and some other reptiles (komodo dragon) who have survived but anything close to what ancient cultures used to fear and revere such as a dragon or flying snake.

It's possible but not proven. I would refer you to the legend of the mkele mbembe (spelling probably wrong). In the Congo there are persistent reports of a large sauropod-like creature that, if it exists, is almost certainly a survivor of the dinosaur era. The problem is that these creatures have no place in the modern world. Their time is gone and the world is a much different place than it was 100 million years ago. I'd need concrete, irrefutable proof before I'd buy into anything of the sort. It's a nice thing to fantasize about and make movies about but extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof and so far there isn't any.

Check archaeology. I think fossilized human and dinosaur remains have been found in the same geologic formation, which would be nearly impossible unless they lived at the same time.

Many ancient representations of such beasts aren't specific as to size. Some accounts may have been allegorical or even fictional. Not everything you see in a book today is true, especially fantasy and science fiction.

Many ancient cultures also attributed properties to animals which have no origin in fact.

It's hard to draw solid conclusions from cultures of thousands of years ago.

people have always found fossils & assumed that the creature that left the bones in the ground must have relatives living somewhere.
the winged lions portrayed in ancient mesopotamia were based on fossils that are still commonly found in syria for instance. the ancient chinese used fossils found in places like dragon bone hill as medicine when ground to a powder.
the greek minotar was based on mamoth bones still found in the area, when the bones are assembled as a 2 legged upright creature the trunk opening in the skull resembles a single eye socket.
though not all dinosaurs were reptiles anything like them that survived into human times probably would be a type of reptile.
so who knows. after all people in early america actually did hunt & kill elephants(mamoths)
