Why do my neighbours that have motorcylces feel the need on a Saturday afternoon to stand and watch their bikes with the engines running. Often they seem to be "tinkering" with the engine or just enjoying the sound. Car owners do not as a rule do this. Surely if I went out and sat in my car and revved it and played with its engine something would be said.

If your neighbours would rather stand and listen than ride the bike, they are missing something important...

whether an engine has been pre-run in on the production unit, it won't have been loaded, it would have been on a rolling street, so all new motorcycles could be run in via the owner at a lifelike %., and extra constructive to no longer have a passenger for the 1st 500 miles. enhance the load of revs gradually as much as one thousand miles.

If they are "tinkering" with a bike, then they most likely are trying to get it into tune. Running the bike is the only way to determine if the bike is set up correctly. Your statement about car owners is not exactly true. Have you ever been to a car show? A '69 Dodge Cuda is great looking, but is only truly appreciated when you light it up and rev that Hemi engine. Car enthusiasts as well as motorcycle, are proud owners and like to show off their goods.
If the neighbors are overly obnoxious, then go over to them and ask them politely to cease doing what offends you.
Most motorcyclists are every day people and will not bite. That is as long as they aren't in a Motorcycle "gang" like the hells angels. Then, just call the police!
Good luck. I hope this info has helped.

Well I have owned bikes for more than 25 years, have a bike business and have never encountered this, so I would suggest that you best go and ask them instead of us, as they are the ones doing it.

The only time people leave their engine running is for a few seconds at the start of a journey to let it warm up.

depends on the bike and the biker. Somebikes need more servicing more often.
My kawasaki runs fine, i service it myself and the only time i need to run it whilst tinkering with it is if im balancing the four carbs. Or if i have an ignition system problem( faulty coil,HT cap etc)
Most cars only have one carb, or injectors and have owners who either dont know or care to service or maintain thier car.

Motorcycles due to thier higher performance - running tollerances require maintaince more often than a car. My engine oil should be replaced every month.
Some bikers(especially the born-agains) have more money than sence. They bend easily to peer presure and buy aftermarket systems that either have more noise or at least made by acompany that thier biker freinds approve of.... I buy an exhaust system because my old one is rotten and beyond repair!

And actuatly i have seen car drivers gather in groups at Md's to compair engines ,kits, exhaust systems. Why do car drivers buy aftermarket exhaust systems that create more noise than HP!!. How is having a 10,000watt sterio system, a sound investment???? on a 'hot hatch', that youve botched and 'bast##dised' to look like a poor 'fastn furiouscar'..

If you have a complaint about noise polution then you should take it up with your nieghbour o rthe police or inviromental health.

P.S some water cooled bikes have automatic fans on them!.

First of all there is know "Tool effect" wit guys who ride Harley's (riding a 1200 Sportster myself)
He probably has a tuning calibrator in his bike, which helps to tune the air and oil mixture going into the engine. If this is not tuned right his engine could be ruined. Also some bikes before electric starters need to sit while running for awhile to warm up the engine. He probably is not trying to show off or make anyone angry, he probably needs to do that to his bike.

Cars and bikes are usually purchased for different reasons. Most people don't need a bike. It's a desire to have one and all the enjoyment they seek that's involved with it. We all have our little "hobbies" and things that probably drive others crazy, but that is what keeps life interesting. Kinda like the guy that mows his grass at 7am. just because he likes getting up early when I wanna sleep in.

Ah, to the person who answered using the "Dodge 'Cuda" as an analogy...it would be a Plymouth Barracuda. The Dodge Challenger was the similar car from Dodge.

All you guys -
I have one response to this - THERE IS NO MOTORCYCLE IN THE WORLD WHICH WILL RUN, SITTING IN A BACK YARD, ALL DAY!!!!!! The air cooled bikes will melt down in a short while, if not moving. Water cooled, take a bit longer, but must be moving to get enough air through the radiator to cool them. Many water cooled bikes will over heat in heavy traffic.

Now, as to why these guys do this, maybe doing tune up, tinkering, Maybe playing, Quo Vadis????? Go ask them, if they are really disturbing, go to the police.
