These are caused by a deficiency of L-Lysene in your diet. It is an essential amino acid. I get them too from time to time. You can find Lysene suppliment pills at vitamin stores and many drug stores. Take the suppliments and the canker sores will start to clear up in a few days. I promise it works. I can never rally keep up with whats in what foods. I know soybeans have Lysene in them, but who wants to eat soy all the time. I try to eat a balanced diet. And I keep some of those pills at the house. If I start to develpoe a canker sore I know I'm Lysene deficient. So I take suppliments for a few days. It works. I learned this many years ago from a doctor.

Cold sores are very contagious. They can form on lips, under the nose and under the chin. They take at least a week to heal.
Triggers include stress, sunburn and suffering a cold with mild fever. Over-the-counter remedies are available that help numb the area and relieve the pain. Prescription antiviral drugs are also available.
Canker sores are common but harmless ulcers within the mouth, having a white or gray base and a red border.
They are very small and heal in one to three weeks.
Canker sores occur in women more often than in men, usually during menstruation. Some experts think cankers are caused by a weakened immune system, bacteria, or a virus. Triggers are stress, fatigue, allergies, or cuts inside the cheek or on the tongue.
If you get a large sore (about half an inch in size), it may need to be treated with medicine. Use mild mouthwashes or saltwater rinses, and dab the sore with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water or milk of magnesia.

You might have too much acid in your diet. When I was a kid I use to eat tomatos like apples and I would get canker sores like crazy and as soon as I cut way down on eating them they would go away.
Sorry only remedy I know is salt water rinse.
Good Luck

Some consider it to be the most mild form of non-contagious herpes, but I recently read (and I don't have the source) that it is not herpes. They aren't sure what causes it, but there is really no way to stop it. I get them too and sometimes they will recur like in your situation or I might go for months without one. Usually for the really bad ones I'll use Anbesol.

Canker sores are a form of herpes, yes.
You might want to see if a Dr will perscribe acyclovir (the generic form of valtrex) to make them not occur as often.
Here are some other rememdies as well.... http://www.animated-teeth.com/canker_sores/t3_canker_sore_remedies.htm
