It depends on the restaurant. McDonald's is really cheap, you can feed a family of 5 at McD's for about 20 dollars.

But if you go somewhere more expensive such as Appleby's, or Chili's, it's going to cost about 80-100 dollars to feed a family of 5 people.

Even ordering pizza from Pizza Hut always costs about 30 dollars, and that gets a bit expensive.

I'd rather just cook a decent meal for my family. That way I know what has gone into the food, I know it's healthy, I know how well it was cooked, I know it's not poisoned, and I know how much each serving actually costs.

Cheers

Well it really depends on the size of the family. For a big family, it usually is cheaper to buy groceries & cook at home because eating out in big groups may get a little pricey. However, if there's only like 2 people living at home, I would say eating out is fine because sometimes when you buy groceries, the food tend to be overdue or get rotten before you have time to cook it and eating out for two isn't that expensive, unless of course, you go to an expensive restaurant.

But for me, I would prefer eating a home cook meal.

Cooking at home is a lot cheaper than going out to eat. In addition, you can eat healthier and have more control over portion size.

To help control costs at home, we make a "menu" up at the beginning of the week, working leftover nights into the menu and trying to use food that we already have at home.

Stay at home and cook. And if you want real savings stay as far away as possible from any processed foods because for pound for pound they are the most expensive items in the supermarket.

Tonight I will make a shrimp dish with rice. The shrimp I bought frozen two pounds for $10 minus a $1.50 from a coupon.

Shrimp - $8.50
Rice - $ .50
Vegetables- $2.50

Sherbet - $2.00 for 1,75 liters
Juice, coffee- $3.00

Total $15.50 for four servings with leftovers enough for one lunch.

So that's less than four dollars per person and you'd be hard pressed to find a similar meal for that price. I do most of the cooking in our household and I can feed a family of four on as little as two dollars per serving and no I don't mean endless spaghetti dinners either. Last night we had fresh Talappia (fish) with potatoes, fresh cole slaw and a green salad, total cost about $10 or $2.50 a serving.

Stay home and cook. What people spend on dinner at times, $35 to $55, could actually buy a few nights worth of things to cook at home.

Depends on alot of factors.

If it were something you were cooking that required alot of different (and possibly expensive) ingredients, it might be cheaper to go out to a restaurant if you figure how much you're spending and the fact that you might waste the stuff you don't use.

Also depends on how many people you're feeding and what you're feeding them.

It's always less boring to go out to a restaurant anyway. Plus, no cleanup, variety, etc.

Sometimes it's just a matter of convenience. My husband works nights, I work days and we have a 7 1/2 month old. Sometimes, if I don't stop and get something after getting off work on my way to pick the baby up from my mom's, I don't have time to eat.

Stay at home and cook. You can get a 10lbs bag of chicken for like $8.00 or something. and that will last you a week if you eat chicken everyday.

In that same amount of time, you can spend $21.00 a week on a 3.00 value meal at mcdonalds per day. Knowing you need breakfast lunch and dinner that's $9.00 a day. so you are looking at $63.00 a week. Chinese food and pizza is more expensive than that.

Buy food at the grocery store and save money.
