Because it is only a rule in the American League.

The disignated hitter was proposed about 35 years ago for one reason: More money. Since pitchers are almost guarenteed "outs" and can end a big rally just by being in the lineup, some owners thought that pitchers should be taken out of the lineup so that more runs can be scored, more long innings can occur, etc. This, they figured, would bring in more people and more ticket sales.
The American League embraced the DH, the National League did not. The reason is probably that the American League was less traditional, and was comprised of more teams from the NorthEast.. Money is more important to new yorkers and Bostonians than tradition.
Remember, baseball went without the Designated hitter for 90 years. It's still a relatively recent "invention".

It's a compromise between AL rules and NL rules. WHich applies depends on the home team.

The NL never embraced the DH concept.
Their hitters have to go to work on defense, just like anyone else. They don't use the DH.

Becuase the NL is better and they don't want lazzy people on the team who sit on the bench and only hit.

It's so sportscasters can say the NL is "the hitter's light league" and the "weaker, baby brother of the AL" ... har, har.

The N.L. owners didn't want to have it, so they voted against it. There was a misunderstanding, the phillies and pirates were going to both vote the same way yes. However they changed their minds and voted no.

Because N.L owners are too cheap to fork out the high salary of a DH.

its an AL league rule, plus it's a very stupid idea and the NL way is much better

Don't ask me, but it's one of the stupidest rules ever. Pitchers are in the game to do their job, pitch. Why they hit, I don't know. Imagine if a pitcher takes a big hack and pulls a muscle in his arm? All that, thanks to the stupid non-DH rule?
