i say without question Ella Fitzgerald a close 2nd. ----- you could roll up all of todays artist ,- brittney-jay-lo and the likes and they wouldn't add up to a fingernail to Janis or Ella ----- just punch in Janis Joplin videos and try "CRY BABY " (live from toronto) or ball and chain ( Monteray pop festival )

i like Janis Joplin, too, and Ella ( i have a diva CD of her too) i couldn't say who was best, there are so many fantastic singers, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Shakira, and they are great in their own category for their own style.......tough call ;)

That's your opinion. Mariah Carey for one. Karen Carpenter for another. Aretha Franklin is amazing. I have been to her live concerts years ago.

I've heard cats in heat sing better than Janis and I have no disrespect for the music of that era.
Dido has an awesome voice, so does Tori Amos... my gf makes me listen to her sometimes.
