They don't have any plans to sue.

Edit - Stormy I have seen reports that they are willing to step into the witness box but that is not just because people disagree with their story. And I honestly believe that is sensationalism from the media anyway.

I think they might be successful if they are suing people that slandered them. This is an open case - all the evidence isn't in. People are saying they did it, when those people were thousands of miles away and couldn't possibly know what happened. Remember the Duke La Crosse team rape case? People said that they were guilty too - before learning the facts of the case. Some people are just mean spirited. If the McCanns are guilty, however, then they should be imprisoned for life, but first let's get all the evidence.

If there is a cover up and all evidence comes back inconclusive I think they will sue everyone. They have never been shy where there is a dollar to be made.

No, because they have to prove that the stories are false. It's all empty threats now anyway, and I don't think that anyone takes it seriously. There is no way they can sue everyone who disagrees with any part of their story, because there are too many who do disagree. They want to preserve their precious reputations, because that's their number one priority now.

no, you cant sue someone just because they say something about you that you dont like, however, they could do, if there is no evidence at all for what was printed or said. however, the problem with that is that they have either contributed to the rumours themselves by giving information which is inconsistent or it has been information received by the press from supposed sources, therefore, there may be an element within the police or authorities, which have indicated that they believe something which is then spoken about. i dont see how they have a chance to be honest

Bring it on. Considering they have said twice that they plan to sue newspapers in Portugal and so far have done hee-haw. I am not sitting here quivering in my shoes. Indeed I would call Gerry and Kate as key witnesses for my defence to burst open the prosecution case!

By law, you are only ever allowed to bring so many law suits before you become known by the legal term, a vexatious litigant, at which point you can be stopped from taking further action.

This is to stop people who make a habit of it.

Possibly not as newspapers and the media in general know just how far to go.

Probably not. Once a person becomes a "public figure" the courts do not, in general, entertain legal action against critics.
