First off, I think you are confusing memory with the hard drive.

The memory is a little stick containing IC chips that are wiped clean when the power is turned off.

The hard drive actually contains the files necessary to run your system and all the programs.

If you really are referring to the hard drive, and you want to return it to factory condition, your best bet is to reformat the drive, then run the recovery from the recovery CD. That will restore it to factory condition.

Also - since files are never really fully erased, there are programs at the link below that you can download that will write & re-write 0's and 1's over the unused areas of your hard drive a number of times. (I think this is referred to as "deep cleaning") Using this will more fully erase any potentially important personal information you may have had on the drive.

Good luck.

By computer memory you must be talking about the HD. The way I know to erase it is by format. You can format the HD using the windows or linux installation CD. In some point of the installation process, it will ask you weather format or not the HD. Then you just choose yes.

To copy your files, I suggest you to buy an usb pen-drive. Its cheap and easy to use.

Yes it is possible. Your computer should have come with a restoration disk. Put it in the CD drive and follow the directions. This will leave your computer as if you had just bought it. It is also possible to clear only parts of the hard drive. If you want to save any files put them on a CD or zip drive. If you don't have one you could also attach them to an e-mail and save the e-mail as a draft.

the short answer is yes

sounds like you want to sell the PC or otherwise transfer ownership?

To preserve your identity from theft, the best and most foolproof way is to take the Hard Drive out of the PC. Hit it with a hammer before you throw it away. Or mount it into a USB drive case and keep access to those MP3 you need to keep.
