When two super powers ruled the world, there was no need for small countries, like Iran, to develop nuclear weapons. Every country on the planet was protected by the nuclear shield of either the USA or the USSR. MAD kept the peace.
Does the world need a Ying and Yang, like the USA and the USSR, to keep a balance.

My wife's family was on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall after WWII and risked their lives to cross it. A slower, older couple that was trying to cross didn't make it, and their blood stained the snow on the ground red. Do I miss the USSR? Do I miss oral surgery? Are you nuts? Good riddance to the USSR - they were MONSTROUS. The US wasn't exactly an angel in the cold war either, but they did what they thought was necessary to prevent the USSR from taking over the entire world, and it worked. Communism might not be dead, but it is certainly dying.

We need that like a sore tooth, with ICBM lined up and ready to blow up not just the WTC but the entire city of New York, and every other major city in the US and the other way around, pretty much every thing of importance in the USSR. The end of the world was indeed very close.

In case you haven't noticed the standoff between US and the USSR is back on again.

But even when the two nations were giving their warlike verbiage, other nations had atomic weapons. India, Pakistan, China just to name a few.

I'm not worried about Iran and North Korea because they are too vulnerable themselves. They may have one or two silo's but the US, still maintains a full arsenal and can wipe out those nations in one fell swoop.

I don't.

But Cheney and the other neoconservatives ruling our government apparently miss the cold war so much that they are trying mightily to resurrect it by planting missiles in former soviet nations.

When two superpowers ruled the world, nuclear deterrence existed between them because at their core, they were run by rational people. Alliances did not prevent other nations from developing nuclear weapons. England, France, Israel, China, India and Pakistan all went nuclear during this time.

That's what gave us the motivation for NASA and much of our technology. Both motivated eachother, like sibling rivalry.
