Hi,

She could buy 1 classical and 10 jazz, or 3 classical and 7 jazz, or 5 classical and 4 jazz, or 7 classical and 1 jazz. All of those are $46.

I hope that helps!! :-)

Write equations to express what you know.
let "j" be the number of jazz records
let "c" be the number of classical records

4*j + 6*c = 46
solve for "c" given "j"
c = (46 - 4*j ) / 6
plug in values and write down the answers
j , c
0 , 7.66 not possible
1 , 7 possible
2 , 6.33 not possible
3 , 5.66 not possible
etc
etc
10 , 1 possible
11 , 0.333 not possible

4j + 6c = 46
and j + c = 10

4j + 6c = 46
4j + 4c = 40
take away second from first

2c = 6
c= 3 she bought 3 classical resords

if c=3. c+j=10
3+j=10
j=7
she bought 7 jazz records

4x+6y=46
2x+3y = 23
You get the solutions
(x,y) = (10,1) (7,3) ( 4,5) (1,7)
