My best friend does debate at school so I get to hear her debate speech alot. She starts by saying

"72.... The number of children who will die from AIDS by the time I am done with this speech." It's attention catching and impressive because it shows that you have knowledge of your topic. So you can start by saying

"#.... The number of children who suffer some sort of abuse every day in the United States alone." or something like that.

Firstly, what's your stand on child abuse? Are you completely for or against it? Then state why. Provide examples taken from the media of child abuse cases and explain the situation and what happened in the end. Maybe even explain what happens psychologically to an abused child. Many people focus on the physical, but I've yet to hear a speech about how emotionally it scars the child for the rest of their life. Also, get statistics. how many abused children live with both parents? a parent and a step parent? Or in foster homes?

Does this abuse extend to sexual abuse, too? You should decide this, and I'm guessing you're arguing why child abuse is BAD, so you'll need to write the speech in such a way that it convinces your peers to never raise a hand to their future children. Include the ppunishments for abusing a child, and again, find examples from the media.

Preparing a speech on child abuse would be best if you had some actual events that have happened to children. Child abuse comes in many forms. Verbal, physical, mental and sexual.
I am a parent of a Child that was physically abused by the state certified baby sitter, He was only two then. He was made to be put under a hot or cold shower if he pooped in his diaper. It took him until after he was six years old before he would even put his head underwater in a swimming pool. and even longer before he would take a shower. Then I married a man that I had no clue as to what he was really about. and my son was sexually molested for five years before I found out about it. He was scared to tell me. and it happened while I was asleep. So if you want you can use my story for you speech. Not always do you know that your child is being abused. However, there are tale tale signs. Like trying to commit suicide at age 8. I thought I had done something wrong being a mother and didn't know why my son wanted to die. Now I know why>. I wish I would of known sooner. it will affect me the rest of my life, and so will it affect my son. he is now 27 and he is in a bad way. He is into mainlining drugs and has totally turned on us all. ( the ones who care and love him) I couldnt take his stealing and lying anymore and had to tell him he was no longer welcome around here. And let me tell ya, that was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. but I wasn't going to let him take from us no more so abuse causes so many mental problems and will affect not just the one being abused but it affects everyone that care and love them.

I assume you're against child abuse, but you haven't given us where you want to go with your speech.

You might want to google child abuse and come up with some disturbing facts about it. Two children in my area were murdered by their mothers in the last few weeks. You could point out that people such as teachers, firemen, ministers and such are required in most states to report abuse to authorities, and that Child Protective Services often treat callers with less than courtesy, not because they do not care, but that the number of cases reported is huge and these workers are over-run with such calls. Then, ask why the number of cases of child abuse has increased so radically in recent years. The rest of your speech could be spent in answering that question.

You need to research the subject - try to get some stats specific to your city, state. Create an outline of what points you want to make. Write your speech following the outline - do additional research if you find "holes" in your content knowledge. Finally, read your speech allowed and time it. Once you're happy with the text and the length practice the speech often so you will be comfortable reading/reciting it.
