Norton Internet Security. If it is installed and updated correctly and often (liveupdate) I have never had a spyware or virus problem and do not have to reinstall Windows to resolve. If you are running Vista just make sure any antivirus software you get is Vista Compatible and after you install any virus software also run an update immediately because there are usually updates already available.

They are all supposed to do that, Norton, McAfee, AGV, Avast. You usually have to enable monitoring internet files. The problem is they don't work on all viruses so some still get through.

Also some viruses are adware or spyware so standard anti virus programs don't catch them and you need to specifically use anti adware or spyware programs.

Even then some get through, like home shopper and home page hijackers. If you use something like HiJack this it will often provide workaraounds but not actually delete the virus.

The time taken to use all available tools is often about 8 hours or more with no guarantee of success. It is actually quicker to reinstal windows from the start up disk and your essential program set up files from your backup.

back up software also slows your system down a lot, particularly on the daily update downloads.

Regular backups are your most effective defense, coupled with trying to download from sources you know and trust.

AVG Anti virus. Its made by grisoft and is absolutely free. Scan all downloads before you open them and you should be safe. Just keep the virus list updated and it is every bit as good as the ever popular (and expensive) Norton

Linux
I not going to say any one software will protect you. One, they have to know about a virus before they can scan for it. Other factors involved also. Linux OS is about as good as it gets.

AVG.
AVG when you finish downloading automatically scans it and tells you if it is a virus or not, and if it is, sends it right to the virus vault.

And it's free.
