i have a 1995 plymouth neon. my reverse lights wont come on unless i mess with the shifter. ex. i will put from park to reverse and they wont come on, but i can put it in neutral first and then to reverse and they will work. its completely random though. any ideas on what this could be?

Its your reverse switch not real sure if its connected to the shifter or to the shftlinkage near the transmission . but it is your switch. it'd be best to take to a auto mechanic unless your mechanically inclined.

It is the shifter what makes contact with the switch button when the car is in revers ,it looks like the switch needs re adjusting,remove the cowl from the shifter and you will be able to see what is happening .

Take the console off - just a few screws.

Then you will see what your doing in there.

It is pretty self explaining when you take it apart.

This IS a do it yourself fix.

Simple plug and play repair.

get new lights or check the wires

maybe safety measure?? to make sure its in right gear?
