A widescreen signal fills a widescreen (16:9) display. Letter box is when you watch a widscreen signal on an old type (4:3) display, and you get the picture between two black lines.

widescreen refers to a picture with a ratio of 16:9 or 1.78:1

A Letterbox can be a widescreen-like picture but the aspect ratio can be anything from say 1.4:1 to 2.5:1 or other
