The letters represent what is called the fare class, basically they represent what you paid for the ticket and the restrictions placed upon the ticket. For example, a heavily discounted ticket will have normally have higher fees or penalties for any changes you make after you purchase the ticket, it also may be non-refundable. If you know you won't be making any changes and will fly on the dates you bought the ticket for, a heavily discounted ticket is the way to go. If you think you might need to change the dates or possibly not use the ticket, then a more expensive ticket with less restrictions might be a better choice, you need to read the fine print or check with Air India to find out exactly what their rules are. Good luck.

There are two to three classes of cabin in the aircraft which is normally called First, Business and Economy. The letters you have mentioned are the different fare levels available in the economy class.

Yes, there is one difference that I discovered recently. That is, if you are a Frequent Flyer member, you mileage count will be based on this category. Say for example, if your Economy class is "V" category and your flight was from Chicago to New Delhi, you would get 7475 miles (@ 100%), but in the next trip when you travel in "E" Economy then the same trip will give you 3738 miles (@ 50%).

These are fare codes and not just Air India but every airline uses them. It just shows what you paid for the ticket. The lower the fare, there will be more restrictions attached to it in terms of cancellation, date change, re-routing or endorsements on another air-line in case of cancellation of your flight. Its just a way the airlines make money as the seats go on filling up they raise the fair for the same journey.
You never know the passenger seated next to you is in same seat as yours, eats the same kind of food and gets smiles from the same hostess, may have paid considerably more than you or vice-versa.
