My instinct tells me that values are not in decline. It's popular to think that they are, because we like to believe that a perfect world is possible. Or that a better world has ever existed, which of course hasn't.
But than.. this era globalization has brought some strange side-effects. People travel everywhere easily, mass tourism makes things in the world more superficial, people can get what they want more easily, and don't learn how to be concentrate on something for a long time.
Maybe we are reinventing moral values at this moment. We're in an important shift in human history right now, just like 200 years ago. Sometimes moral values seem to be in trouble, but then they always come back. Remember that every society in history (the Greeks) complains about decline.

In order to say that Moral Values are in decline you must first have a moral value line with which to work with

Having a Moral value line doesn't always mean that everything is in decline, it can mean that your moral values maybe set to high or are totally different from what others perceive to be moral values

for instance, Come election time

Politicians always pull out the family value card so that they may burden those who are single with an ever increasing tax bill to cover the cost and lighten the load of those who breed.

from a single persons perspective this is outrageous but from the breeder's perspective this is a godsend

moral values work in the same way

many moral values were setup by the church, an institution rife with hypocrisy, the people who believe in such institutions have pre-programmed moral values that are unique to their way of thought and anything outside of that is classed as a deviation and deviants at best should be tolerated and at worst, in some cases in our history, exterminated.

from the perspective of the church one could say that moral values are in decline, however for those more enlightened, the answer would be quite the opposite

so in order to answer this question one must first find out what the moral values of the person who has asked this are and then take the debate further.

To a degree moral values are in decline, however some of these morals have seen their last days and need to decline.

The strange thing is that when we move away from some moral beliefs we open the door to greater social awareness and more civil rights. (rights for black people used to be immoral, slavery was justified by the bible.) The same will eventually happen with homosexuality.

No I don't think they are in decline. I think that as a child other moral values impact us greatly and that as we move into adulthood the pressure on our developed moral values increases. In this way we have the impression early in life that others moral values are very strong and later than they are weak. It is a question of changing your viewpoint as you age. So I believe that we perceive moral values to be in decline, but in reality they are fairly constant.

I am sure every generation has asked the very same question, but I have to say I think we are in decline, common decency does not have to be governed by one particular society or cultural, religious belief but by a humanistic approach..How do you want to be treated,do you feel safe on your own street,do your children listen to your advice respectfully or does the modern day free for all and it's lack of respect for other people wear you down!
We live in an age where too many children are having children of their own, sexually transmitted diseases are going up massively, attacks on the old/disabled the frailist and most vunerable of society occur daily on streets all over the UK,too many kids know their rights but none of their responsibilities.
We over indulge in alchohol and food and blame everyone but ourselves for our own weakness and we munch away on our takeaways as we see more starving children across the globe, yet rarely check on your elderly neighbour to see if they need the shopping doing and how many times have you been on public transport where some gobby youths and adults(who should know better) watch a disabled person or pensioner struggle to stand up because no one will give up their own seat.....I don't claim to know how to reverse this trend but with the me me generation and role models that fall way short of requirement,I fear the trend will only get worse.

What a big question. Yes, I do think they're in decline. It's probably not an objective view, merely observation. People are materialistic, uncaring, unhappy and violent. Well, not all people, of course, I've just met a considerable amount.

Hmmm. First, I would like to know how you define moral values. Moral values are subjective, and change from one religion to another, one culture to another, from one individual to another, and from one time period to another.

I think every generation thinks the next one is less moral than the last one.

yest they are in decline right now, but the next generation to come along will most likely rebel against current licentiousness and turn into staunch moralists.

its a historic cycle.

hedonism -leads into moralism - which leads into hedonism.....

Absolutely. The number one thing that strikes me is the "I don't care what people think" attitude taken to an extreme. It's okay not to obsess about what people are thinking of you, but it doesn't excuse reckless, careless behavior. It matters what they think if it AFFECTS them. ☺
