In France, the number of people considered overweight or obese has increased by 13% between 1997 and 2003.
19% of children are overweight, or obese. How can a child be overweight and happy? I'm all for educating parents and therefore protecting children from obesity. A child does not choose to be overweight. Society is responsible!
We continue to patronize the fast food industry because obesity is a public health issue, whether people like it or not (results : diabetes, heart disease, ...)
In France, no advertisement, for any kind of food or drink product, can be made without a public health warning notice (regular exercise, eating to much fatty or sugary food can be dangerous for your health etc).
McDonald's adds huge amounts of sugar to their bread so that people will become addicted. That's just an example of which they're are many.
I'm glad that we attempt to "control" the alcohol, cigarette and fast food industries. At least for the next generation of adult's sake.
People (adults) have the right to take the advice or not, but at least no one will be able to say they weren't informed about the dangers.

So some of us can bring ridiculous lawsuits against the franchises because the hot coffee burned us, or the bad food made us fat. Those who don't plan to sue still eat there because, face it, the food is cheap, quick, and tastes good. Ever notice how all the "comfort foods" are laden with fat, cholesterol, and calories? Food that is "bad" for you just tastes better.

Well for one thing, we like the way fast food taste. It's also cheap and fast.
Fast food places have been getting more healthy items like McDonalds getting more salads and the parfaits and Wendy's with more items to choose from.
We just have to learn to limit the time we spend at fast food places.

I'll spare you from giving one of my really long answers and just share a couple of explanations for this:
Clever marketing is one reason. We're influenced in more ways than many (if not most) of us realize. Even if we make a point to consciously tell ourselves, "This commercial means nothing. It's just a gimmick," for example, it still "sticks" with us. It's reaching our sub-conscious, so our behavior is being dictated (at least to an extent).
Another reason is addiction. There are addictive qualities in foods (fat and carbohydrates, just to name a couple). It can be just as easy to become enslaved by these things as it is to be chained down by drugs and alcohol.

I became addicted. I craved the food. I wouldn't be surprised to find out about chemical additives that cause addiction. If that's the case, it should be illegal.
