the goldfishes in our aquarium have been dying at least 2 per week. Most of them get caught up in the pump and their tails and fins get sucked and they're stuck there. I think the pump is too strong. What can i do to avoid their deaths aside from replacing the pump?

A piece of soft netting such as fine lace/net curtain or pantyhose/tights secured with an elastic band will work fine.

it might be the pump but it also maybe the fish or the aquarium if the aquarium is new then it needs to mature for like three months during this time its common for fish to die because of the parasites and things in the aquarium. Also your fish might be sick and dont have the energy to swim perfectly and get sucked up by the pump. Or like you said the pump might be too strong.

Look for the brand name Hydro-sponge filters, these are really large sponges, and if you can figure out the hardware to attach one of these to the pump intake it will protect you fish from the "sucking death". You will have to clean the sponges frequently(in a bucket of pond water),but this only takes 10 or 15 minutes a week.

It sound funny but put a small piece if pantyhose (Please buy new ones the fish will appreciate it!!!) lol over the intake of the filter it will stop them from getting sucked in. You can also put a plastic plant very close to the intake (surround it) that way the fish can't get close to it. GOOD LUCK!!!

Is there any place with airline tubing for you to put in a valve that can reduce the air pressure?
