Kitchen vent is in middle of house. Beams in ceiling need to be cut to get to outside via 25 ft direct path. Easier would be to go down to basement and then out, 40 ft. total. Can kitchen duct go down or must it go flat or up? Vent has 400cfm fan; could add another at end.

The beams I would have to cut are between the first and second floor. I could cut out 3.5" to slip the duct work thru, but they are only 10" beams, and I would be cutting thru about 12-15 of the beams to go outside at that level. To get to the roof I would have to make 3-4 bends and cut thru some major other beams as the current wall is non-structural (and only useful place to terminate is in basement.

My personal opinion is to do neither, the run is to long to properly exhaust the fumes out of the house, the size of the fan would be very large almost the the same CFM for a commercial kitchen, going down thru the basement would create a low point for grease to collect and could be afire hazard as well as messy to clean. I would use a non duct range hood with a grease trap.

Do not cut the beams. There are two options in my opinion. Go up and vent it out the roof. Or surface mount it to the existing ceiling and try to hide it in a soffit or closet.

why cut beams? [that will weaken the roof] just use 45 deg elbows and go around beams, or use metal flex pipe,
[like the type use for dryers]
I did it works great
it will work better going up than down,

Phew youve got a problem there !!!

Heat rises so difficult for fan- plus grease dirt etc will go down and accumilate- I know its a pain but up is only way really.
Can it go sideways and slightly up ?
