Schumacher - Rain Master - This was first suggest after Spain 1996, his first win in the Ferrari. He was also very impressive before then in the rain, such as Spa 1995. It was cemented by Monaco 97 and Spa 98, races where he destroyed the field.

Kimi - Iceman - This is due to a few of his traits. He is very unemotional, is cool under pressure and comes from an icy climate. To a lesser extent his hoobies also include, skiing, Ice Hookey and ice slay racing. It just fits perfectly!

Finnish Drivers - Flying Finn - This is used for a lot of Finnish athletes, but was originally used for there long distance runners that dominated athletics around 1910. Recently it was used of course for Mika Hakkinen, but before that Keke Rosberg too.

Mansell - El Lione - This is an Italian nickname that is used for somebody "who wears their heart of their sleeve" (on the track) or a "braveheart". Mansell was very brave and often done some crazy passes (around the outside of Berger at Mexico 1990 for example).

James Hunt - The Playboy - doesn't need much explaination. Women, rock n roll, cigarettes and drink.

Alain Prost - The Professor - Because he drove with his head. The best at winning a race at as slower speed as possible and whilst doing so preserving his tyres and fuel (in the days when you only could use so much). He typically qualified around 5th, sat back and looked after his tyres. Then everybody else would need new tyres and he would win without stopping.

DC for Coulthard goes without saying.

Eddie Irvine was "Swerving Irvine" or "Irv the Swerve" for his somewhat eratic driving, especially in his early Jordan days.

When they stand out in a certain way, the media or team or whoever just sorts of gives them a nickname. Nick Heidfeld has a nickname: Quick Nick. Heikki too: Finn with a grin. Hey Kimi could be the new El Lione, he does wear his heart on his sleeve too and the outide passes especially the one he did on DC was crazy. So that would give him like what 3 nicknames (Flying Finn, the Iceman and the new El Lione)? But I think I saw a banner from the Ferrari team that called Kimi the "Orgoglio Ferrari" meaning Ferrari's pride.

Many are colloquial, used primarily in the media rooms at races and often coined by the Brit media. Some of the following wouldn't be familiar to many of the young kids who populate this forum:
Hunt the Shunt - James Hunt who used to crash (shunt) a lot.
Andrea de Crasheris - Andrea de Cesaris, notorious for his inability to finish races without some type of crash.
Jack Lafferty - Jacques Laffite, obviously a Brit media pun.
Gearhead Berger - Gerhard Berger, which is an obvious one.
Bruno Giacomelli - Bruno Jack O' Malley, an obvious one.
Vittorio Brambilla - The Monza Gorilla. He was from Monza and known for an extremely strong handshake, that almost crushed bones in the recipients hand.
Technically he wasn't an F1 driver, but Tazio Nuvolari was known as the Flying Mantuan, probably because he was a fast driver and he was born in Castel d'Ario, Mantua, Italy.

M. Schumacher got his nickname because he is the best driver on rain, and Kimi got his nickname because he is cold-blooded. Prost got his nickname 'professor' because he was a good driver like a professor

I thought Michael was Rain Master - as per the German word 'Regenmeister'

Nigel Mansell was known as 'Il Leone' in Italy because he won first time out for Ferrari in 1990.

They get their names from particular events or talents which make them stand out, the press usually label the names. For instance Hamilton is now known as craneboy in certain circles, after when he was lifted out of the gravel pit
