Well in the good 'ole USA at least, I think we primarily can thank the religious right for keeping marijuana illegal.
For whatever reason, they seen nothing wrong with a drink (probably because it's referenced in the bible). On the other hand, they see pot as a "gateway drug" that will lead everyone who tries it to shoot heroin.
You're right, of course, in that pot does not make people violent, although I tend to believe that alcohol doesn't actually make people do things they wouldn't otherwise do either; it just loosens their inhibitions.
Alcohol of course, was illegal for a while, from 1920 to 1933. It was actually the Methodists responsible for spearheading that movement. Interestingly enough (I guess we didn't learn from history) the primary reasons for lifting prohibition were the proliferation of gangs who were selling booze in the black market, the high cost associated with the "war on booze" and the lack of consistency of the alcohol strength (which was sometimes dangerous).
Of course all of those issues are alive and well today with drugs (not that I would favor legalization of all drugs, mind you).
Call me Libertarian, but at the end of the day, it's simply not the government's business what an adult does in their own home as long as it's not hurting anyone.

Unilaterally decriminalizing pot could worsen family with adjoining international locations, and it could violate worldwide agreements. it somewhat is somewhat confusing to undo a regulation, yet via the time you're an old guy or woman, pot will probable be legalized. Pot can do considerable harm, even with what others could desire to declare. It has ruined many human beings's lives. yet, i think that there are a number of extra rationalization why the state does not pick it allowed right now. One reason is the flow of unmonitored and untaxed money interior the gadget. till such time that the government can make certain a thank you to get its decrease, it somewhat is going to stay unlawful!

Well it is stupid to have one of them legal and the other one not, either both should be banned or neither.
But anyway, the fact that weed gets smoked while booze is drunk might have something to do with it (i.e. you can't passively smoke beer) but then that ignores Tobacco (which makes the illegal drugs look downright nice).
I think it's because alcohol and tobacco usage just got so common and so acceptable that bans of them wouldn't work while the others were marginalised enough for a ban to be politically acceptable.

because it is harder to make alcohol if everyone made it themselves ,they couldn't control the % wise of how much alcohol was in it ,the goverment wouldn't make money off sales,,,and it's easier to grow pot,,they can't make all the money off it,,anyone can drop a seed in the ground and basically that is it,, yea, u can water , feed it and make it better ,, but all you have to do is dropp a seed in the ground,,weed is hearty,,it can grow almost anywhere,, marijiana is expensive when it comes from the goverment,,almost 1,400 for 60 pills,, think how much money they would loose,,,Im probley gonna get reported by saying this,,but ohh well,,,, in Pa,,u can get a quarter of pot for 60$ better stuff costs more,, i could buy 2 pounds of pot ,,for the price of 1 months perscription of GOVERMENT pot,and still have 200 ,,, that 2 pound would last,, umm hopefully a few months,,but would depend on how many friends come over to jones,,, say for 2 months ive smoked a bag that cost me say 600 for pound ,, the goverment lost 2,200 dollars cause i didn't have to buy it from them ,,, that's why it is illegal,, not because it is a gateway drug,,not because it cause voilent behavior,,but they would loose money,,, thats it ,,,, i hope i got it right ,,it may be ounces of pot and not pounds,, but either way,,they couldn't control who could grow it ,,smoke it and sell it

Because the government can't think of a way to control the profits for themselves. I don't like it, but have tried it. It just puts me to sleep. And booze makes me feel like crap the next day. So, I just try to get high on life. An old fuddy duddy here. But, I agree.

I've also pondered this question for years.
Just think, if everyone smoked pot before they got into their vehicle the speed limit could be reduced to 35 mph. Imagine the fuel savings.
Our prisons could reduce their inmate populations dramatically, making ample space to put away violet criminals.

They both impair you judgment and have adverse physical effects.
In a society where we must drive cars that can kill and make life altering decisions, there is neither place nor need for them.
They both should be legal only by prescription and limited for medicinal purposes.

I've been wondering that for years. When was the last time you heard of some one smoking a joint and wrapping their car around a telephone pole?

I agree with the first response. I don't know why either drug is legal.
