You can have freon put in it but it may be nearly as cheap & better to buy a new (energy Star rated) unit

Have a friend or a family member ship one of those Brita pitchers to you so you can filter the water and drink pure instead of crap. There's no way I'd drink from a dehumidifier.

probably cheaper buying a brand new dehumidifier but buy a good make that you know will last. just don't buy the same make as you have now.
