I have an HP 4650 that's out of warranty. Whenever I print a black and white page the text fades out the closer that it gets to the right hand side of the page, right up until it vanishes all together. However whenever I print color this does not happen. Even if there is only a little bit of color on the page the print out is perfect.

My toners are all full, my imaging drum is at about 90% but my developer is at about 10%. I have also checked the distribution of ink inside the toner cartridge and they are all OK. The diagnostic prints are all perfect.

What could be wrong? I'm certain that it's a hardware problem but a not certain where it stems from.

sorry, the heading seems to have confused some people. My printer prints perfectly when printing in color, but it fades out to the right of the page printing in B/W.

It IS a color printer (I've been printing color for ages) and the toner cartridges are not at fault as it prints black perfectly as part of a color image. It only fades when I'm printing plain black text.

Have you tried a print with text as the black, as in images the black will be made up from "composite" black, with the C, M and Y toners.

Open printer remove all toners, I seem to recall the BLACK is at the bottom, Check for toner spillage around the laser opening for the black drum. If there is some, this needs carefully removed. If you do not have access to a proper toner vacuum, remove as much as you can with VERY MILDLY moist tissue (kitchen roll, not toilet paper, the stronger stuff) and then clean the lens to the laser with a dry tissue or 2

I have a HP 4050TN and mine doesn't print Color. Its just a B/W Laser jet. Look up your model to see if its even supposed to print Color regardless of the toner you have in it. And What i've noticed is that the Printer can still tell you that you have a full toner even though you don't.

hmm that sounds interesting I would recommend that you jump right into the inspection of the alienation bars behind the
toner cartridges to make sure they are not out of position. Run the Alienation Motor test and verify they all move.
