You can read the Qur'an online or from the book Qur'an without taking Wudu, if you're not Junub, of course. But, if you don't have Wudu it is preferable not to touch the Qur'an. Yet you can touch it if you have to. It's just not Mustahab to recite or read without Wudu. So you can take Wudu, then do it.
But As I know Wudu is compulsory for Salaat. But Preferable for Reading or Touching of Quran.
Some scholer said that Wudu is compulsory for touching of Quran. They give the reference of Quran Ch. 56, V. 77-82
77. That (this) is indeed a noble Qur’an
78. In a Book kept hidden
79. Which none toucheth save the purified,
80. A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
81. Is it this Statement that ye scorn,
82. And make denial thereof your livelihood?
Actually this verses talk about the LO Ye Mah Fuj where the main Quran is kept hidden by Allah and No one can touch it without purified MEAN Angels.
So Other Scholer also say that you can touch it. They give the Example that.... The verses reference that Angels can touch the Original Quran and No one can't touch it include Satan, or Zin even Human.
And if this Verses talk about the Hard Book Quran then Non-Muslim can prove it Wrong by Bought a Quran and Touch it.
And Most of The Muslim give Excuse for Wudu. They don't have time to Wudu and Read the Quran.
So I think touching the Quran is Allow without Wudu. And Every Muslim should Read the Quran daily or more than there TEXT BOOK or the other Book.
(But it is preferable to touch the Qur'an with Wudu)

Good question-often wondered about that.
I only recite from memory Qur'an I know. I'm always in wudu before reading Qur'an, either online or physically turning the pages. I rather be safe than sorry.

Performing wudhu is mustahib for reading quran. But for touching the words of Quran, the wudhu is obligatory. Read quran online without Wudhu is o.k. But if you are junub, then you can't recite more than seven verses of the holy Qur'an other than those in which obligatory Sajdah occur.
Forbidden acts for those in Janabat:
To recite those verses of the holy Qur'an on the recitation of which performanceof Sajdah becomes obligatory. These verses occur in four surahs of the holyQur'an:
Surah Alif Lam Mim as-Sajdah, 32:15
Surah Ha Mim Sajdah, 41:38
Surah an-Najm, 53:62
Surah al 'Alaq, 96:19

dear friend,
performing wudu is one way to make sure we clean inside and outside..
when a woman in period, she must not touch or better yet read Quran,..she also cannot enter mosque in her period time or perform solah..
and its not obligate to perform wudu before read the Quran except if you want to touch it,..
so as the conclusion, always make sure that we always in state of wudu, right?

You can read the Qur'an online or from the hard copy (the book--Qur'an) without taking Wudu, if you're not Junub, of course. But, if you don't have Wudu, you should not touch the Qur'an, yet (like I said) you can read it (look and read/recite). It's just not Mustahab to recite or read without Wudu, but we can't say it's forbidden, because it's okay. So, if you can take Wudu, then do it. If not, then read and recite as you like, but without toching it.

i dont think it is necessary to even perform wudhu to touch the Quran but of course you have to do wudhu if you are unclean but it is okay for you to touch the Quran without wudhu and recite it. but it is a good practice to do wudhu anyway :) it is a thawab itself
