No..............

They can NEVER do any drugs, legally. That is all TV and Hollywood drama and it does NOT happen in real life.

Real Narcotics Detectives are not allowed to EVER use any illegal substances. It is against the law and against policy. And most every city has random drug testing to make sure.

And unlike the movies, we do not taste substance to determine that is coke, heroin or anthrax.....

Anyone here saying that the Detectives are allowed to use drugs in performance of their duties is making stuff up or giving their opinion on something they saw in a movie.

Yes they can and have. It is a rare, isolated event that 99.9999999999% of cops will never have to do, never mind for months and months. Yes, one in a million cops may be very deep undercover but that is the very big exception, not the rule. Most undercover work done by cops is simple buy and bust transactions, street level stuff.
On occaision, a cop will have to do drugs to maintain his cover and the investigation and his life. It is usually a one time event. They are also trained in ways to fake it, excuse methods etc. If no cop could ever do drugs while deep undercover, all a criminal would have to do would be to offer it to them to show he was a cop. that would defeat the ability to ever use undercovers. Cops do many things while undercover that are illegal. They do not go to jail, unless it was not part of their assignment, as other misinformed posters imply. Courts have ruled that the police can particiapte in crimes while undercover to preserve the investigation. They can not initiate crimes or entrap people.

Of course they can, anyone can. The right question here would be Should an undercover cop do drugs? I believe the answer is no they shouldn't.
If you are trying to ask whether they can get in trouble for doing it, assuming you refer to illegal drugs then yes there could be serious consequences if they were caught.
Cops are there to enforce the law, but they are not above the law.

See the movie "Training Day". That is exactly how narcs operate - above and beyond the law. The cop played by Denzel Washington said it all : We're the po-lice. We can do whatever the f**k we want." And we should shed a tear when they get killed during these "undercover " operations?

sometimes someone on the job may have to commit illegal acts to maintain their cover. If you'd like to see a seedy long time undercover sting operation, or you're just in the mood for a good flick, watch "Rush" staring Jason Patrick and Jennifer Jason Leigh

I doubt a cop would break the law & do drugs.

Absolutely NOT, you cannot break the very laws you are suppose to enforce.

As far as I know, in order not to break cover, they have to take drugs if they are in that sort of ring.
They get taken care of later though, police funded rehab and stuff.
