I am a former Catholic . The stupidity of all the rules and regulations and definitions is one of the reasons I became an atheist . If there IS a god , and god is good , how could he refuse heaven , if there is a heaven , to a person who is truely good and regrets his misteps , not out of fear of hell , but out of sorrow for having caused pain .
A penace of saying some prayers as a restitution for something bad we have done is bogus ! If we are truely repentant we must set things right with the person(s) we wronged . Or if they are not availble to us , then we can find a similar situation to make right . Prayer as restitution is a false idea of the Catholic Church similar to paying for ( or even praying for ) "indulgences" that could keep us from hell or purgatory . Read the writings of Martin Luther on these things .

It all depends on the extent of your mortal sin. Confessing to a priest does not mean your sins ar forgiven. Repentance follows afterwards. If your sin is towards your wife, confess to her and take the penance she offers. If it towards society, confess to the police and take the penace he offers. The priest is only an instrument of God to put you in the right direction. So confess to a priest and have a piece of mind.

No you won`t go to Hell if you sincerely repent, but Confession embues us with what is called actual grace and we recieve a penance for our sin which is akin to restitution for the offence.

Sentinel gave you a great answer to your question.
Let me just add a few points of my own. Why do we insist on confessing to a priest? Because that's not the way that Jesus Himself set it up. His first act on that first Easter Sunday was to tell His apostles that He wanted them to forgive men's sins and to give them the power and authority to do so in His Name (John 20:19-23). If we are truly His followers, we must do exactly what He tells us to do. He makes the rules, we simply obey.

If you have the occasion to go to confession and do not go, then it is not forgiven because it was through laziness and ignorance that the gift of confession was not used.

that mortal sin is not forgiven unless you go to a priest. yes God forgives, but dont let your conscience fool you. what you think that is right, could be wrong. so know this, your deep, dark sins are not forgiven unless you go to confession.
