Citrus repellent: Cut a lemon into quarters and place in a pint jug. Cover the lemon with boiling water and let it steep overnight. Next day you have a flea repellent that you can use in a spray bottle. Spray all over your dog remembering especially behind the ears and around the head generally (careful of eyes), around the base of the tail (once again keep away from delicate bits) and under your dog's `armpits'.

You can also add apple cider vinegar to the dog's drinking water it is suppose to repel fleas.

Try adding some Brewer’s yeast and garlic to your pets’ food; many people swear it keeps fleas and ticks at bay.

Natural Repellents and Dips

Use a mixture of Avon Skin-So-Soft, vinegar, and eucalyptus oil as a bug repellent for humans and animals.

Natural flea and tick dip:
2 cups, packed, of fresh rosemary and/or peppermint
1 quart boiling water
4 quarts warm water
Pour the just boiled water over the fresh herbs and let steep, covered, for 30 minutes. Strain and add the liquid to the 4 quarts of warm water and then saturate the animal. Let it air dry.

Flea Spray
spray her with an herbal mixture of:
chamomile
valerian
licorice
witch hazel
Prepare an infusion using one tea bag of each herb, and when it's cold, mix it with witch hazel.

I do not use chemicals, including the type you can get at a vet's office anymore and I do not have a problem with fleas. However, I did lose a dog by using K9 advantix, that I was appling for prevention. My dog ended up having seizures and had to be put to sleep because of the damage the chemicals caused to his system. Also, many petstores and online pet supply stores, now sell the same stuff the vet sells.

I know of plenty - and I also know that none of them work. If you actually want to kills some fleas, rather than just slightly annoy your dog, you're going to have to go in to a vets, because this is the only place that safe and effective flea treatments, like Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Advocate can be found. You'll also need a house spray.

Don't use pet store treatments, these are even worse than 'home remedies'. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.

I have heard of apple cider vinegar as a natural remedy. Some people claim to have great success with the vinegar. It can take a few months of daily vacuuming and putting a tablespoon a day in their water. I have never tried it myself.
My dogs are very fortunate. Where I live we don't seem to have fleas. I still use a monthly Frontline treatment. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
You can find the regimen here, http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/acvfordogs.htm

Apple cider vinegar is perfectly fine as a rinse. I have found using just plain old dog shampoo and leaving the suds on for a bit kills the fleas also. If you have flea eggs in your home that have dropped off your dog, then you will have to vacuum well. Please get a blood test for your dog for tick borne diseases such as Lyme, Ehrlicchia, I believe dogs can get Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, etc. Here is a great tick removal trick that seems to work every time. I figured I would share it here. I cannot take credit for it. I got it via e-mail and was supposed to be sent out by a school nurse. Tick Removal A little trick for all you farmers/hunters/fisherman/woods walkers/cemetery visitors/bad golfers etc...... Please forward to anyone with children or hunters, etc!! Thanks! A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!! I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc. Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, 'It worked!' Please pass on....... everyone needs this helpful hint.

this is what I do..bathe, any soap left on dog for five minutes kills fleas, not ticks. wash bedding in bleach and soap every week. mineral oil in rinse water will help keep fleas from biting but keeping rugs out of your house and vacuuming constantly helps a lot and avon skin so soft works for some people. some of my babies have allergies so I use this regimen on some and spray on others. I have very few fleas, only ones they pick up outside. ticks are very hard to kill butt the vets have a tick collar that they say works well.

I've heard of the cider vinegar, but doubt if its any use. Don't waste time or money on supermarket bought products especially Bob martins. Buy Front line, or advantage. Loads of people use them, so must be safe, and they work. (By the way, read recently that any dog flea solutions are very dangerous when used on cats!)

i've been told washing them with shampoo then lay on the conditioner (a lot of it) and leave it on for about 5 minutes will kill them. be sure to treat the house (if the dog is in the house), your yard and its bedding area to prevent reinfestation
