iTunes will never charge your credit card unless you actually buy something. They are very safe, honest and secure.

They want your credit card info in case you have a bogus iTunes gift card, (rare, but happens) or you buy more than your gift card is for. (In other words, if you have a $10 card, but that only gets you ten songs - $9.90 - if you want an 11th song, you need to come up with $0.89 more - that's where they go to the credit card.)
