I like to think it supports the Darwin principal, survival of the fittest. If a person is dumb enough to do that they don't deserve to live.

That's just how the adapters are set up. If you put the batteries together, nothing will happen. They may warm up a little, but 9 volts (or 18 volts i guess) is not enough power to do anything spectacular. The only reason you shouldn't do it is it will drain the battery.

Not sure how or why your plugging them together like that but if you connect more than one battery together plus to plus and minus to minus the output voltage stays the same but you get more oomph when you use more than one battery. Connecting them end to end like in a flashlight increases the voltage by the amount of the voltage of each battery connected.

gives you a short circuited 18V battery

as an electrical engineer, I can't explain the rational to make it so that you could do that. I would have done it differently.
