The three basic food groups are fats, carbohydrates and proteins, Fats are important
in the body because the sebaceous glands of the skin produce certain materials
which help to lubricate the skin. The body also uses fat to help retain the heat it
generates by depositing a layer of fat just under the skin over the greater part of the
body. This layer of fat is generally thicker on females than on males of equal weight
and becomes thicker as a person becomes overweight.
Carbohydrates include all the various types of sugars, starches, gums, pectins and
cellulose. The most important carbohydrate is glucose. It provides most of the body’s
energy. Glucose is stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen, which may be though
as animal starch. Whenever the muscles are used. The glycogen, stored in them is
broken down to provide the energy needed for muscular work
is not possible to do without them and live on the non essential amino acids,
because the various proteins of the body require quantities of the essential ones.
Without them in the diet, the body would not be able to manufacture these proteins.
Since the proteins are a part of our living processes, they body would not be able to
exist without a supply of essential amino acids. When one of the essential ones is
missing from the diet, specific deficiency symptoms develop.
Deficiency in fats will make a person quite underweight and cold. Deficiency in CHO tired and weak; and headaches, hungry.. Deficiency in proteins has poor energy.
