I am a british citizen on a working holiday visa in Oz. My passport runs out next feb and I dont want to have to go back home to renew it. The info on the british consulate web site is asking for mums birth certificate and also my photo to be signed - however is this just for australian residents who also have a british passport?

Renew your passport in the Embassy of your country where you are staying now.

If it's just a renewel you just need to fill out the paperwork (you don't need to send in a copy of the birth certificate (the mother's birth certificate and documentation proving that you're British is just for the first timers and they keep a record of it on their systems I presume, the renewels just fill in the details (call mom up to get that info), see second link). Just the C1/C2 form, plus counter signed pictures and the fee (for the checklist see 1st link) and the current passport. I think the biggest problem for you since you're on a working holiday visa in Australia will be getting someone to countersign the photos as you will need someone in the professions, is British or a Commonwealth Citizen to sign for you and to have know you for 2 years, I think you may need to send back the paperwork to the UK for that one.

The passport section at the BHC is for British citizens in Australia (which you are) or people who believe they qualify for a British passport.
