The original idea was for N.A.T.O. the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was to offer a balance against the U.S.S.R. and Communist Pact Countries.

Today, that role has been adapted to meet threats from terrorism as well as helping former Communist countries from the Eastern Block adapt the military strategy to one more suited towards friendship and co-operation with the west.
