I want to make a large 4 foot by 3 foot square about 2 inches thick of clear polyester resin or something similar. I have never used anything like this before... but looking up the resin online it is very expensive and I will need quite a bit. I am looking for a place to get it cheap or a cheap alternative. Thanks!

I want to encase items in it.

There ain't no such thing.
Depending on what you are embedding, you might need a 'low-temperature' curing plastic resin to prevent damage to the embedded object.
ALL these resins are expensive unless bought in 'bulk' amounts, and even then they are NOT cheap.

Do you want to carve it or encase something?
If carve, take a look at cast acrylic (not extruded, which shows strain cracking after drilling, much less carving) which should be available in 2" thickness because of use for bullet proof windows.
Buying resin in 55 gallon drums is about the only way to go cheaper if you have been looking at 1 pint cans.
