I took a stray punch breaking up a fight in a junior game tonight resulting in a black eye and a couple of stitches. It immediately reminded me of this shot that Kevin "I will stop all fights before they happen" Collins took from Craig Berube many years ago. One punch opened him up good.

Anyone else have any fond memories or videos of officials taking good shots?

Erica: Tonight was a freak incident because it was a young kid who didn't know when it was time to end the fight. He wouldn't stop apologizing afterwards and I defended the kid to the referee. He received an additional penalty but not as severe as he could have gotten.

I have doled out my share of punishment over the years. Last season I had a player I separated in fight attempt to slew foot me. I used an old trick I learned from playing and dumped him on his head. Needless to say, the coach, mom, dad and everyone in the crowd rooting for that team wasn't happy. Often it comes down to you or them, nothing more than self defense.

I also once had a former tough guys from the Islanders and Flyers come after me. Both were scary, they were both my height and twice as wide.

That Slovakian incident was bad. I witnessed one of those as a player once. Talk about nuts.

Zam: I do work the Met but last night was an Eastern Junior game. If that is the same Wilson from Lancaster, I don't know him real well but have worked a few of the college game with him.

Bob: Collins was notorious for that at the end of his career. Nothing would raise more boos in Philly than him charging into an altercation to prevent a fight.

LITY: I took my shot like I should have. I stayed on my feet and in control of my player. The trainer cleaned me up, I put on a clean sweater and finished the game. It's not a big deal really, nothing more than a hazard of the job. Sounds similar to your shot, the kid didn't try to hit me, my head just ended up in the wrong spot at the wrong time. They do tape these games and you occasionally find highlights on YouTube. If I come across it, I will post it for certain.

Juniors? Were you doing a met league game? You should have hit em back, no doubt you were a better skater and could have taken him if it was met league. lol

JK Lubers, hope you heal fast. I got a old friend by the last name of Wilson that refs many games down your way. Familiar? Think he might do more DVHL, DVCHC, and MACHA games than Met games, but you may know him anyway.

EDIT- That would be him, just curious, small world. I ran the rink in Lancaster for about 6 years, got to know him then.

A few, a few...

I can't remember a specific incident of an official taking a good shot, because I usually only remember what went down with the players and the results of the game.

Anyway, it's a good thing you don't ref in Slovakia?:

Haha, what about when it's the other way around? I think it was in the Pens/Caps game that a ref accidentally elbowed a Caps player in the face and the guy went all hurt to the bench. Pittsburgh's commentators were joking that with the elbow and the ref leaving his feet, the league should probably send it in for a suspension.

Great stuff Lubers. I am sure they use this video as an instructional of why you back off, give them their space to resolve their differences and then take them off to the box.
Also, it is not only the refs that risk injury, they can really do alot of damage to one of the players if they tie up one guys arms and the other guy gets free hammer time. I think they are better at this nowadays, you used to see that all the time but not so much anymore. They are tought to stay the hell out.

I don't have the video but I remember back in 1983 when Tom Lysiak tripped the linesman who kept throwing him out of face offs. He received a 20 game suspension for it too. It was the longest suspension at the time.

I hit a ref in junior..............knocked him out. The guy I was fighting and I just started laughing...we thought it was funny (it was 1959, 1960...before highlight video) because we had never seen it before.

It was a roundhouse punch, everything I had.

Sorry Lubers, not trying to play down what happened to you.
