I am a highly educated "backyard breeder" transitioning to becoming a professional breeder. I do not care for ramblings about why I shouldn't breed, etc. Yes I have a vet. I do not think it appropriate to page her on the weekend to ask her why my dog is panting. Yes I have done research. Yes I have all the appropriate supplies and a good environment for mom and puppies.
By the way, she doesn't have a fever though her belly feels warm from the milk coming in. Her vulva is not puffy and has no discharge besides a little bloody discharge after she pees. She has been drinking A LOT of water and eating A LOT of food. Yes, I have given her a little bit of calcium, in the form of cheese to help her recuperate from the birthing. And YES I am feeding her premium puppy food that my veterinarian recommended.
I still need to figure out why she is panting so much although I have taken her outside to the very cool back yard several times and she still hasn't stopped panting. Thanks!

I don't know alot about breeding dogs but my suggestion is to see how she goes and after a few hours if you don't see any improvement then you should probably contact your vet.
I would also like to say good on you for asking for other people's opinions regarding the health of your dog. You didn't just assume it was nothing to woory about. You obviously care about your dog.
I thought the point of this yahoo answers was to get advice from other people. I thought the idea was for people to be supportive not condescending. You shouldn't have to point out that you know what you're doing or defend yourself against people's accusations.

Are you sure that all the pups have been delivered? If you didn't have an xray done to know in advance how many there were, she may still be in labor. I had my poodle xrayed a week before delivery & was so glad I did. She quit acting like she was done but I knew there was 1 more. Try walking her around the block, then watch her to see if she'll deliver anymore. If she's still panting & doesn't settle down, you may need to bother your vet. Good luck with the babies & mom will eat like there's no tomorrow so be prepared.

panting is a sign of stress, I would be worried, at least call an emergency clinic and ask. She could either be trying to regain her strength or she might have another puppy you dont know about and is in distress. Or having trouble passing the placenta.

Panting can be a sign of distress. Is it possible a pup was missed in the X-ray and has not passed through?

She is probably retaining a puppy and/or placentas. You need to try to get her in to the vet.

i think that even though you really took good care of her i believe that she is tired and she is gaining her strength like us when we work out we take kind of long to catch our breath or even when we give birth it takes us a couple of days to get our strength back. :) hope she gets better.

If you are so highly educated as a backyard breeder, why are you asking questions here??
You need to reeducate yourself about calcium needs.
