I believe the race fell into financial trouble between trying to find a title sponsor and having a huge bill from the city for essential services.

Do you mean the San Francisco Grand Prix? The race hasn't been run since 2005, because the organizers couldn't get enough sponsorship money to pay for city services.

Money. They couldn't get enough sponsors. I still think that Lance not racing it killed it. He said that his knee was injured so he showed up and took a tour of the city with the mayor instead. That was the end of it.
