Yes, they will be in the carpets too. This is where an estimated 95% of any flea population lives.

Your dog is not currently protected against fleas, because flea shampoos do not work. They only wash off the current fleas, then the animal just gets reinfested as soon as it's dry, because shampoos aren't a preventative. Nothing from a pet store, including house treatments, are going to work. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.

Go in to a vets for some proper housespray, and a proper treatment for your dog, like Frontline. It's a spot-oon - you have to wait 48 hours after bathing to use it, and make sure you get it on the skin, not the fur. You could also get a Capstar, which will kill the fleas currently on the dog within a few hours, but this is also not a preventative, just a temporary solution.

I work at a pet grooming shop, so we get this question all the time. What you should do is give your dog a flea bath, then make sure you spray everything your dog lays on with the flea spray (ie carpet, couch, bed...), and then make sure you put your dog on flea preventative such as Frontline or Advantix. Also if your dog goes outside alot, you may want to buy a yard spray. I hope things work out for you.

Use one of the products sold by your veterinarian such as Program or Advantage. These products are put on the dog's back and last up to a month.

You can also use a fogger in your house that has a growth hormone in it to prevent fleas from developing. Be sure to follow directions carefully and don't over-do it -- this can be dangerous!

Most pet shop products are not as good as the ones your veterinarian sells.

In my area, our common flea is the cat flea. If you have stray cats wandering through your yard, they can carry fleas that will breed and spread to your dog.

Good luck in helping to keep your dog flea-free!
