It's native to Australia. Its a marsupial, not a mammal like a bear, so it isn't really a bear, just that Europeans sometimes call them koala bear so the name has stuck.

The Koala.
Early European settlers to Australia called the Koala the Native Bear, and the Koala is still sometimes called the Koala Bear, but it is not a member of the bear family.

The Koala is an Australian native marsupial animal.

It's not like saying bear bear.

I agree with sunnycoastcraig. What exactly is it that you are asking?

Koala does not describe it as a bear.

The word "koala" means "No water" - because koalas will never drink water. You will never see a koala go down to a river to drink. They get ALL their nutrients from the eucalyptus leaves. (And they are very picky too. They only eat certain species of eucalypt only)

Sometimes people use the word "bear" because a lot of people (especially foreigners) call them "bears" anyway, so the name stuck.

I don't get your question....apart from the fact a koala is DEFINITELY not a bear anyway, but what do you mean its like saying a bear bear? Even if it WAS a bear, (which it is not) why would that be any different to how any other bear is described? E.G. Grizzley bear, polar bear...or varieties of other animals, e.g red kangaroo, grey kangaroo etc.

Are you saying you interpret the word "koala" to mean bear? A koala is a type of mammal, belonging to the marsupial family and is closely related to the wombat.
