sometimes I'll get a sound that sounds like mlerp, or gneer, but never "wacka-wacka clang-honk" like some cats...:)

Actually, there was a pretty prominent study done in 2002 by Nicholas Nicastro, who determined that cats have perhaps two dozen different vocalizations. The interesting thing is that cats do not meow to each other -- it is used exclusively to communicate with humans.

Not sure if that was the answer you were looking for... but hope you enjoy it.

I've got a cat who never meows. She has whole range of sounds and they all mean different things. We can normally tell what's going on with her by the sound she makes. She even sings along with me.

Its not the word "Meow" that they communicate with. Tone of voice, growling - when something threatens them, high-pitched "mews" - insecurity, ears that stand up - excitement, something has their attention, ears laid back flat - anger, hostile (especially at whatever threatens them), scared, rolling on its back (happy, content, playful, wants you to play with them) are just a few ways they communicate. They are much smarter than you think.
