I work at an animal shelter that is run on donations, and there are lots of other things besides food that are often needed.

Bleach
Hydrogen Peroxide
Rubbing Alcohol
Cat litter (clay is usually best)
Toilet paper
Paper towels
Envelopes
Dish detergent

Also, some shelters take aluminum cans. They then recycle them for the money. which most shelters need. Especially if they are like the ones I work at, which runs off of nothing but donations. Thanks for taking the time to donate to a shelter. Those of us working there really appriciate all of your donations and support.

Blankets and towels were already mentioned. My shetler doesn't give the dogs toys, but we do give out new toys if we have them when a dog is adopted. And yes, Office supplies are good. But if we don't get them, it's ok. We are more about taking care of the animals before ourselves.

Also, if you don't have an animal shelter or even vet in your area, talk to your local government or officials about getting one. The loose animals shouldn't be shot. they deserve a chance. Work on a petition to get one. Make a difference. One person can make a difference.

I didn't think about the smaller animals, because we are fourtunate to have volunteers who are highly educated in small animals that come in with food and treats for our small animals. but they are just as important as cats and dogs, and deserve a chance just as much as any animal. I wish every shelter had volunteers like we have. Look up our shelter sometime. Luzerne County SPCA.

I would donate and support a shelter IF there was one where I live. There is nothing like that here, not even a vet. When there are too many dogs running free all over the place, they get shot. The closest Humane Society is in Winnipeg Manitoba, which is 8-9 hours away from my town in northern Manitoba.
I wish that Vicki Burns (head of the Winnipeg Humane Society) would keep up to her constant promises to help dog owners on northern Manitoba native reserves get close/easy access to vet care, that everyone can afford. She talks about it every year, but nothing ever happends. >:(
I'm the one that everyone in my town turns to when they have problems with their dogs, and when they have puppies that they want to get rid of. One time a dog owner even wanted me to treat his dog's gun shot wound. The dog had severe internal damage, there was no way that I could patch it up.
the guy and his family cried when I told them there was nothing that I could do.
It would be nice if my town had a vet 24/7 or one that comes once a month.

I worked at a shelter for several years.. your list is good.. also paper, pens, office supplies.. (treats for the staff)

Volunteers typically helped walk dogs or play with cats but sometimes we would get a volunteer who would help fold laundry.. brush dogs, or try to train them...
and dont forget if the shelter has rodents.. hay or carrots!!!

dont know if this was posted already but towels and blankets and toys, leashes and collars, and things for the smaller animals (if the shelter takes them as mine does) . Call your local shelter and ask for their wish list.
