I have a GP rescue and I know people are going to breed their animals no matter what anyone says so I'll save you the "overpopulation" speech.
Yes it is very possible the dad will kill the newborns if left in the cage with the mother. I had this happen and it was very tragic. He will also make her pregnant again as soon as she is finished giving birth which is very hard on the mama's body.
In answer to your second question. Boy + girl = baby. As simple as that. You definitely do not want a baby to become pregnant. It's like asking a 10 year old human to have a full sized baby. Their bodies aren't developed enough or big enough to safely do that. Please be responsible and make sure that this doesn't happen. It's very sad to find your piggie dead in a cage over something that could have been prevented.

DON'T BREED- We already have TONS of guinea pig's out there why bring more unwanted into this world? I thought about doing this myself but, I've found out 2 is enough!
You don't even know all the information about breeding & should do lots of research if you plan on not listening to all the people saying don't do it. 20% of pregnant guinea pig's die because they have complications.
But, if you plan on breeding them anyways & don't want to listen, then I'll go ahead & answer your questions.
1. No. The dad will not eat the babies. Infact, you could keep him in the cage as long as you want. But, soon after birth she'll be in heat again & able to get pregnant & that's hard on the guinea pig. Don't do that. I would suggest taking the dad out about 2 weeks before she's due to deliver.
2. NO! They can get the mother pregnant & the dad can get the females pregnant. You must have at least 2 BIG cages to fit 1-4 guinea pigs in. Depends on how many girls & boys you have. You must seperate them soon- 4 to 6 weeks.
I find 2 guinea pigs quite expensive long enough letting them mate. Having to buy shred, food, toys, treats, vitamins, and all the other things they need.
DON'T DO IT!

Try this website-
www.cavycages.com---You will find, if you havent researched alreadt that pet stores give you not very good info on how to take care of piggies. After discovery this website I wondered how my piggies had survived with my lack of knowledge. I had no clue there was so much to do to care for them properly.
But I will tell you from experience some of my thoughts.
1.) I too wanted babies, so I mated my 3 month old female to my male. She had three. The babies were completely and absolutely the most adorable things I have seen in my life. They are born with eyes open and teeth. They practically come out eating hay and can almost care for themsleves. They just need mommas milk to get a jump start on life. Cute little buggers.
2.) I regretted mating my piggies afterwards. Why? Well I had to go through the process and money of building a bigger cage, not because Dad would eat the piggies, but because the female can get pregnant 2 to 15 hours after having the babies. Trust me I know. She had four pups 63 days(Gestation is 59 to 73 days long) after having her first litter. Luckily all was well. This left me with the grand total of 11 piggies. (I had two others that I didnt mate.) So here I am trying to accomidate enough cages that were big enough to seperate all my piggies, females w/ females, males w/ males. And please be careful and note when the pups are born because th babies can get pregnant I believe shortly after being weaned2 weeks old). I think its 4 weeks old they are sexually matured, so you will need to seperate males and females AS Soon as weaned. If your momma is older than 8 weeks old, please dont breed her. It is dangerous and can kill her.
3.) Ok so I survived my ordeal with a pregnant piggie (back to back) and really enjoyed watching the babies grow. Boy do they grow fast too. If you still decide to breed after researching, (Which I hope you do research as there is lots to know. Check out all the links on the webpage I gave you.), make sure you handle the babies all the time so they will get used to human contact and not freak out when being held. They love to cuddle up on your chest or belly under a blanket.
4.) Please be responsible and do some research on piggies. There is lots to know and the babies are a lot more work than you realize.
5.) Hope my info helped. And Good Luck!

First off, there is an overpopulation of piggies, and indescriminantly breeding them is somewhat irresponsible unless you already have homes available for them.
Males and females can stay in the same cage just fine. He can even be in there when she gives birth and afterward. In the wild, piggies live as groups (much like zebra), so Dad will be more than fine with his babies.
However, they come of age very quickly (about 4-6 weeks), and so the males and females will need to be separated, unless you want litters every two months or so. If you let the male and female be together (which you would in the beginning to get babies), splitting them up later is cruel. (Think of someone taking away your bf/gf.) So your only choice would be to get him fixed--which is VERY expensive. (I know--I learned the hard way, and $150 later...)
My advice...get two girls or two guys. (And be sure they ARE two girls or two guys. Mine that I got from a pet store were SUPPOSED to be two girls, but surprise, they weren't! I had babies, and then ended up getting him fixed.) The boys won't fight as long as there are no girls present, don't worry.
Good luck with your babies and feel free to email me with any additional questions with piggies!

hi no dad will not eat them the male is a fabulous father when they do have baby's the males have to be in there own cage when they come of age the males will fight to the death and will get there sisters pregnant in no time. females can be kept together that should be no problem. I'm a small animal breeder since 1995 and i also have a pregnant female you might want to remove the male for two days after the female has them because she can get pregnant again 12 to 24 hours after giving birth.
Thanks Denise's Critters

I'll spare you the speech about how irresponsible it is as a pet owner to breed your pets but I will say that if you're determined to do this, do as much research as you can and not just asking questions on forums like this. Go talk to people at pet stores, talk to a vet, talk to people at the local animal shelter, go look at reputable websites for information. The more information you have, the better prepared you will be to deal with the baby guinea pigs and find homes for them if you don't intend on keeping them.

Do not breed your guinea pigs AT ALL if you KNOW you are going to keep them for their whole lives then you can but dont do just cuz you want to see a cute baby guinea pig!! but if you do keep them no the dad cannot stay with the babies until they are at least 2 months old be careful though the dad might mate with one of the babies (girl) and the boys might fight over the girls and they will fight to the death so you choose

No you cannot have girls and boys in the same cage. They will breed with each other. The males need to be kept in their own cage. The mother should be less than a year old if this will be her first litter (it's hard to tell how old she is if you get her from a pet store). Why do you want to breed them?
