Description: Perhaps the most widely recognized of all dog breeds (because of Lassie), The Collie is a strong, active dog. He combines speed and strength with grace. The expression on the Collie's refined head shows alertness and intelligence.

Country of Origin: The Collie originated in Scotland.

Height: Male Collies range from 24 inches to 26 inches. Female Collies range from 22 inches to 24 inches.

Weight: Male Collies range from 60 to 75 pounds. Female Collies range from 50 to 65 pounds.

Colors: Collies are typically sable and white, tricolored, blue merle, sable merle and white.

Coat: Collies come in two coat varieties. The Rough coat has a long, straight outercoat with a soft, shedding undercoat, which requires regular brushing. The Smooth coat has a short, flat outercoat with a soft, dense undercoat, which requires minimal brushing.

Temperament: The Collie is a very intelligent, friendly dog breed, who makes an excellent children's companion and gets along well with other household dogs. Suspicious of strangers, the Collie makes a good watchdog.

Health Concerns: The Collie is susceptible to eye problems, hip dysplasia and epilepsy.

Life Expectancy: The expected life span of the Collie is 8-12 years. However, if well cared for can live into their teens.

Living Environment: Collies do best in homes with fenced yards. This dog breed is not recommended for apartment life since it tends to bark alot and is inactive indoors.

AKC Group: The Collie is in the Herding group. -

Collie's aren't very long lived most of the time, I would guess 12 years is pretty much their average lifespan.

It would really depend on what type of abuse and what physical effects it had on the dog as to whether abuse would factor into lifespan. Certainly a horribly neglected dog that had diseases like heartworm or mange, or wasn't vaccinated as a puppy, or had early tooth decay, etc. might face an earlier death than a dog that was beaten or ignored.

If she dies a natural death, you'll usually know it's time... dogs generally try to hide when they die, and usually they deteriorate in their last few days... losing ability to walk, unable to control bowels, vomiting, etc. If she gets to that point, and you are able to get her to the vet before she dies slowly, it would be kindest to put her to sleep. If she gets a little stiff in the joints, or loses her sight or hearing, but is still functioning mostly normal and doesn't appear to be in pain, she's not quite ready to go yet. You'll probably know when it's time to say goodbye, when her quality of life is no longer acceptable.

I wouldn't spend your time worrying about when she'll die, spend your time worrying about how she lives.

I know how you feel my cat was abanned and just recently i found a stray dog looking for a .... I cried for afew days but then i got over it. I think border collies die at about 27 years if they have been abused they are strong enough and will live over the average or under.
Hope i helped i love animals i wanna become a vet soon.

XOXOXO

Our collie just died two months ago, at 10. But they can live to 12 or 13.

Congratulations on taking in a dog who needs you so much. I'm sure you'll make her last few years really special.

It all depends on how well you take care of her and how much money you want to spend on her. In my family, you find money you didn't know you had to save your pet. (and in my family we all have a lot of pets, more than the law say we're supposed to have, but SHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!, don't tell anyone!, and all of our pets have their shots and be told are mostly all over fed.)

If the pet is kept being abused, their life span will be shorter, than a pet that was rescued and giving to a loving family.

Here is a story I would like to tell:

My mother had a Dachshund, and was really over weight. She lived to be 17 years old.
I don't think you can really brace yourself when your pet dies unless you know that they are really sick.

After awhile my mother got another dog, and when she got really old and sick the vet told my mom that "Dolly" would live after a month, my mom decided that "Dolly" would just stay at home and be comfortable and be on meds for pain and whatever else she need for her condition (I don't know what that was)
"Dolly" surprised everyone including the vet.
My mother was was happy bringing her home to be with her, because after awhile (more that 8 months) "Dolly" died in my mother's arms after a seizure. My mother was happy that she was in her arms and not at the vets, alone. My mother said she knew the day was coming, and was glad she could just hold her one more time.

Like I said I think it all depends on how well you take care of your pet.

In my family, when we (humans) die, we all want to come back as one of our family pets. (We joke that we take better care of our pets than we (humans) do ourselves.

Well it must have been horriable for her. All dog have the same life span depending on what type of dog it is. small dogs live longer than big dogs and mixed dogs live longer than all of them. I had a mixed breed that lived to 15 but pure breed dogs usally die at 11-13. You shouldn't think about her death it will just make her worry dogs can feel you emotions. be happy and she will live a good life always give her suport!

There is no way to prepare for a pets death. If she is 10 years old she has lived a long life focus on making it better and love her as much as you can. She'll love you for that!
