Whoever you got the dog from should have told you this. Besides if you cant afford a vet, can you afford dog ownership?

Why is everyone jumping on this person for asking a simple question? You don't know what the circumstances are. I have gotten a dog before without having the money for the vet because it was either go home with me or they were going to put him down. He was a sweet old rottweiler of 12 years that no body wanted because he was old and he ended up having the best years with us.

To answer the original question wait until you get the money then go to the vet and they can tell by the teeth

Tooth tartar is a poor age-guessing method (and a side note: if the dogs teeth are in fact ROTTING, you've got bigger issues than just his age). Different breeds teeth develop tartar at different rates and in different stages in their lives, and depending on the history of the dog, he could have had a previous owner that took care of his teeth. There really is no "best way" to guess his age. Watch his activity, his moods: Is he more playful, more energetic? Does he chew a lot? Those could mean he's a younger dog. If he's more subdued and mellow, he could be an older dog.

As a side note I'm going to comment on something many other answerers will also ask you: Did you realize when you got this dog that part of good dog ownership was caring for his HEALTH too, which means regular veterinarian visits? If you know so little about this dog's past that you don't even know his age, it means he probably needs to be vaccinated, which is required by law in most (if not all) areas. If you cannot afford to care for the dog properly, please find someone who can.

If you can't afford the vet, then you can't afford the dog. Simple. Why are you concerned with how old the dog is?

If you brought home a dog, you should have had him/her to the vet by now. NO EXCUSES! And the vet would've likely given a close estimation of the dog's age.

If the dog's teeth are rotting, that is a whole other problem ... one that has to be addressed by ... yep, you guessed it! A vet!

Does it matter how old he is? If his teeth are rotting, they're going to rot whether they are 2 4 or 6 years of age. If you can't afford the vet, and his teeth are rotting, then he is going to get very sick.. Probably have a heart attack.
