Salutations,

I am a civilian, and intend to stay that way, but I was wondering if I could get any input on getting a teaching job for the department of defense in Japan. Any job would do actually.

Well, the reason I am asking about DoD jobs is because I already know a good deal about finding teaching jobs. I am still in school right now and just exploring the different options. Thanks for the heads up about nova.

If you can get a DoD job then do so. Those jobs pay well and the military tends to treat their civilian employees well.

Curious as to why DoD teaching job in Japan. As said above, teaching jobs do abound in Japan, just don't go to work for NOVA (up to now the largest conversational English school in Japan) which has suspended ALL of its schools because of money troubles -- inability to pay teachers and staff, to honor student contracts, to pay a fine by the government for improper business practices.

Try Dave's ESL Cafe (www.eslcafe.com) or some of the other teaching job web sites listed below. Really, a loose "Teaching English in Japan" search on Yahoo will bring up several good resources.

you apply through the DODDS website. when compared to military personnell, civilians do have many of the same benefits, but in some cases are restricted. for instance, you may only live in Base housing for 5 years and then must move out for at least one year before you can get back on the list to move back on base. your access to medical and dental is also further down the list than Active duty and their families.

Like a previous answerer mentioned, visit the DODDS website. It's a big advantage if you're currently a civilian employed on a Japan base/installation/unit, from what little I know.

I'm not sure bout teaching job but maybe you can apply to some other DoD related jobs. See CHRO (civilian human resource office) website:

or MCCS jobs in Okinawa: https://www.mccsokinawa.com/jobws/index.asp
or iwakuni:

Teaching english jobs abound in Japan. In fact, it's the only job you can get unless you have a specialization (ma/phd) or can speak and write fluent japanese.
