Techically, 1 cup is a standard volume (8 ounces = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons)

For butter, it's two sticks (1/2 lbs of butter). If you look on the side of a stick of butter, there's markings that tell you how tablespoons and fraction of a cups there are.

In the US, a measuring cup is 8 oz. A cup of butter is 2 sticks or 1/2 pound or 16 Tablespoons.

1 cup of butter is 2 sticks or 8 oz
All measuring cups are the same size, and when a recipe calls for a cup it means measuring cup, not drinking cup.
