1080i is a type of video resolution. It is one of the video resolutions that is categorized as high definition. Others are 720p and 1080p.

1080 is short for 1920 x 1080 pixels. 1920 pixels across and 1080 pixels down. Higher resolution means more detail.

i = interlaced. This means the video signal updates odd horizontal lines and even horizontal lines in alternate fashion. The way it displays is really not important. It's more important how it affects the video quality. Interlaced will tend to have jagged edges and not as smooth of a picture as the other type, progressive.

Progressive video signals update from top to bottom, which means you get a smooth edges.

1080p has a better picture than 1080i. 480p has a better picture quality than 480i. 1080p is better than 720p. I think you get the picture. (pun intended)

1080i means that the resolution of the picture is 1920 vertical pixels by 1080 horizontal pixels and i stands for interlaced scanning. Interlaced scanning is based on the principle that the screen shows every odd line at one scan of the screen and then all the even lines in a second scan.
