My fiance' and I are getting married in a year. But my mom and grandmother and sister are sooo not excited or enthused about wedding dress shopping... And I don't have any close girlfriends whom I can get to go with me... Am I attempting to do my shopping too early or something?

A year is perfect. If you purchase your gown off the rack you can still look at 3-5 months just for alterations, depending on the time you purchase. If you need to order your gown then look at 2-4 months before the gown arrives and then another 3-5 months for alterations. Also keep in mind that the first three months of the year are called "Bridal Christmas" and the lead times on orders sky rockets just because there are so many girls getting married in the May-July time frame.

So look at it this way. If you found your dress today and needed to order it, chances are you are looking at receiving it between the end of December and 1st of February. Then at that point if you start alterations (because it falls in the middle of bridal Christmas) you can expect to get your gown back by the end of May/ middle of June. Then its time to do Bridal portraits and still leaving time to have the dress cleaned for your wedding.

If you are planning on loosing weight or someone whose weight fluctuates a lot, I suggest going ahead and getting alterations started with just the hem and bustle and as the wedding date gets closer then they can take in the sides and top in necessary.

Nooooooooooooooooooo !!! You need to shop for that special .. "once-in-a-lifetime" dress as early as possible.

Sometimes you will find the dress you want quickly. Other times, you may look for a LONG time for your dress. You may need to shop in a certain price range. And - you may find the perfect dress, but not the perfect size in that dress .. so alterations my be needed, etc. DON"T WAIT !!!

If you cannot get anyone enthused about your wedding .. don't let that spoil it for you. Be happy .. and go about doing this yourself. Just don't think about the ones left behind .. not helping you. This is special for you.

If you are having even a medium-size wedding .. you well have SO MUCH to do ... so get busy !! ... you will be amazed at all the details, errands, plans, decision making, etc.

Go find yourself that amazing dress asap !!!!

a year is about right. however, if you haven't conceptualized the feel or look of the wedding (ie, traditional, modern, contemporary, 1920s glamour, etc) then you shouldn't buy the dress. only get the dress when you have an overall image of the look for the wedding and reception. otherwise, you'll end up with a bunch of disconnected ideas thrown together. if you already have those things ironed out in your head, then go ahead and get the dress that fits that vibe. you'll want to get it fitted and have it so you can plan your jewelry, makeup, hair, and other accessories around it. i bought my dress about 6 months before the wedding. if you intend to lose any weight, wait a little longer. that way you can buy the dress and avoid some of the expensive tailoring to size it down. NEVER buy a dress small because you PLAN to lose weight.

No. It is totally up to you whenever you want to go dress shopping. In fact, as a bride-to-be, myself, I recommend starting now, jsut to see what's out there and what style you think you'd like to wear. Before I started looking, I thought "Well, I'm gonna wait cuz I wanna lose 20 lbs." Well, depending on where you find the dream dress, it could take MONTHS for it to come in, then you have to deal with alterations, fittings, etc. So even if your weight is going to change, or whatever the case may be, I would start looking now. When you have some good girlfriends to go with you later on, you;ll have some dresses to show them and get a second opinion on! Good luck with the dress shopping!!

As a wedding pro, I have heard from my fellow wedding shops that very popular gowns can take 6 or more months to arrive from the manufacturer.
Also add some extra time in there incase you need to have it altered just a little bit more.

You do have a little time, you want to order it no later than 6 months prior, but maybe start getting magazines and go through them with your Mom and sister and it may get them in the shopping mood. Also you can start sifting out the things you really don't like - and get their input too. Of course as always don't get your heart set on one certain style, you could put it on and hate it and love the one you hated in the mag. It happened to me...lol.

I've been looking for my dress for months, and my wedding is scheduled for next October.
I think it's good to get an early start, that way, if you can't find anything you like, you have plenty of time to have something made, which is what I'm having to do.

A year is actually not too early - you have to find it, it has to be made and altered and it all takes time. It's time to start looking. You don't have to be old-fashioned if you family isn't kicking into gear. Get your fiance to go with you. People do that all the time.
