When confronted with his guilt, David acknowledged: "I have sinned against Jehovah." Then God's spokesman told David: "Jehovah, in turn, does let your sin pass by. You will not die." (2 Samuel 12:13) David was shown mercy because of the Kingdom covenant. Also, since God is able to read hearts, he must have evaluated the genuineness of David's repentance and concluded that there was a basis for extending mercy to David and Bath-sheba.

Yet they would not escape all the deserts of their error. They were told: "Notwithstanding this, because you have unquestionably treated Jehovah with disrespect by this thing, also the son himself, just born to you, will positively die."—2 Samuel 12:14. -Watchtower 3/15/86

David was the king and it was not done in an obvious manner. He killed Uriah by putting him on the frontline during battle.

Probably because David was the King and no one wanted to stone him for his transgression of adultery. It seems that a lot of people didn't suffer the penalties that the Law demanded after the Jews got to the promised land and Joshua had passed away.

David repented. Nineveh was guilty of FAR worse crimes, for which God was going to destroy the entire city. When they heard the preaching of Jonah, they repented and God withdrew His hand of judgment.

How much more us? Are we not as guilty as David? Yet, when we repent, God forgives and cleanses us. It is an important event to consider and to put in to play in our own lives.

Read Psalm 51 for David's repentance before God.

You have to understand is the Bible is also full of things that we should not do, by example. David was King and repented. All I can tell you that although you may not like the story, or find it repulsive, I assure you, that is WHY it is written.
